Why a former chef calls wedge salad a rip-off

Asked about menu items that feel like a rip-off, a former chef singled out wedge salad and the work it leaves to the customer.

The question for restaurant chefs

Restaurant Chefs of Reddit were asked which common menu item is almost always a total rip-off or prepared in the laziest way possible. The question left room for either complaint: the price of a menu item or how little work seems to go into preparing it.

One person said they are not a chef anymore, but had a clear answer. A “freaking wedge salad” was the most nonsense menu item they had ever seen. That was the item they chose in response to the question.

The problem with the wedge

Their complaint was the audacity of serving someone a giant, uncut block of lettuce with toppings on it, then marketing it as something fancy or special. The toppings did not change what bothered them about the uncut lettuce.

Calling that wedge fancy, they argued, does not make cutting the lettuce the customer’s job. Yet the customer is the one left to cut it.
