Storage worker hears his own voice echo six seconds too late
A night security guard checking locks hears his own words repeated from an empty hallway, always six seconds after he speaks them.
The empty hall repeated Eddie's words six seconds after he spoke. He worked nights, checking locks after renters went home. Eddie said, Unit 14 is secure.
The echo that knew too much
Six seconds later, the same words came from the empty hall. The padlock was cold, but the handle felt warm. Eddie could not enter rented units.
He phoned Marcus, the manager. I'm leaving, Eddie said. A moment later, the hall repeated it, then added, Marcus is coming.
The voice gets closer
Marcus didn't answer. Eddie grabbed the gate keys and heard his voice behind him, closer now. Don't open it.
He ran outside and locked the gate. The next morning, Marcus found Eddie inside Unit 14, facing the back wall. Eddie's phone was playing, I'm leaving, six seconds before Eddie said it aloud.
